A client recently asked why our firm practices in so many areas of law. We handle, Civil Litigation, Probate, Wills and Trusts, Real Estate, Family Law, Business Formation and Transactions, Collections and Bankruptcy. He wondered how we can be expert in so many areas—each of which is handled by specialist attorneys.

I explained that we are not specialists in any of the areas of law we practice in but rather are focused in those areas of practice. We have been practicing law and representing clients since 1975 making us more than well versed and capable of handling many types of cases. We are like a medical PCP. We can treat most things. And we refer out to specialist lawyers where needed. After 50 years of practice, we know who the best specialist lawyers in Phoenix are.

Platt & Westby, P.C. has competence in most of the areas of law that a person may come in contact with during a lifetime (except for criminal defense or personal injury). It has been our experience that this is a strength. Our client’s lives are not simple. A businessperson may have issues involving real estate, contract enforcement, estate planning and, sometimes, bankruptcy. In a divorce, real estate issues, financial issues and, sometimes, bankruptcy are also involved.

Similarly, in probate, financial issues and real estate issues are common. Litigation skills are necessary in every area of law. A lawyer must have skills in many areas of law to recognize issues and craft solutions that make sense. When so many areas overlap, the attorney is better equipped to develop strategies to protect the client’s interests across the board.

We have always offered no-charge initial conferences. In our firm, the initial conferences are handled by our most experienced lawyers and our partners, themselves. This is a form of triage. Some of the people who contact us do not need lawyers. They need questions answered and many need to be pointed in the right direction to help themselves. Some have problems that we cannot handle. Where appropriate, these are referred to specialist attorneys. Others need help that we can provide. These are the individuals or businesses we have dedicated our professional lives to care for and protect.
